Losing Fat vs. Gaining Muscle

Losing fat and building muscle at the same time is what a lot of us want to achieve. The challenge is that the best way to lose fat, and the best way to build muscle, are totally different strategies.

Let’s keep it simple…

To lose fat, we need to be in a calorie deficit, and eat foods that encourage ketosis. When your body doesn’t have enough carbohydrates available to produce energy, it burns fat and makes ketones that can be used for fuel.

The most effective way to build muscle, is to be in a small calorie surplus with a focus on protein intake. If we don’t provide enough fuel for our muscles to recover and repair, we won’t see any gains. Too high of a surplus and our body won’t need all the calories we consume, and the surplus will be stored as fat.

So when we want to lose fat, it’s best to think of maintaining as much muscle mass and strength as possible, while we lose fat. When we reach our body fat goal, we can then move to a building strength and or muscle size program.
